Return to Monkey Island Story

Terrible Toybox, the firm formed by Ron Gilbert that previously created Thimbleweed Park, is developing the game, which features the return of Guybrush Threepwood voice actor Dominic Armato. Music by series composers Michael Land, Peter McConnell, and Cliff Bajakian will also be used in Return to Monkey Island.

Return to Monkey Island will take place sometime after the events of Monkey Island 2, following Guybrush, who is left “adrift and unfulfilled” after never discovering Monkey Island’s actual mystery. Guybrush has been replaced by a new generation of pirates, such as the new character Captain Madison, while classic sites such as Melee Island are under new, frightened administration.

Elaine Marley, his real love, has shifted her concentration away from governance, and Guybrush himself is adrift and dissatisfied, having never discovered the Secret of Monkey Island. Hip, youthful pirate leaders commanded by Captain Madison have deposed the old guard, Melee Island has deteriorated, and legendary merchant Stan has been imprisoned for marketing-related offenses.

Return to Monkey Island Gameplay

Return to Monkey Island Review: Return to Monkey Island is a 2D point-and-click adventure game. The goal of the game is to progress the plot by completing narrative-based puzzles.

This can be accomplished by exploring locales, speaking with non-player characters to obtain knowledge, gathering goods to store in an inventory, and determining when it is appropriate to utilize them. The player takes control of the pirate Guybrush Threepwood, who travels the seas and visits islands. The user interface differs from that utilized in prior 2D games in the franchise.

When the mouse moves over an interactive zone of the scene, a brief word appears, indicating what action Guybrush would perform if clicked. The inventory interface is designed to operate with controllers or a mouse and employs a drag-and-drop interface to make it easy to use and combine things. The game contains an inbuilt hint system meant to deter players from searching the internet for a tutorial.

The hint system is intended to be understandable “in the fantasy” of the game. For those who haven’t played adventure games previously or in a long time, the game also contains a simpler version dubbed “casual mode.” Return to Monkey Island will also have an easy mode or Casual mode as it is referred as in the game.

The casual mode will ease the puzzle-solving part for gamers who don’t want much of a struggle and would rather simply focus on the tale rather than having to go through hard challenges. Above all, the makers state that the Casual mode is intended for individuals who are unfamiliar with the genre.

Return to Monkey Island Art Style

The new style of Return to Monkey Island is significantly more cartoonish, with more defined and blocky line work. It is similar to the style found in the Guacamelee series in many aspects.

Many of them compared the original pixel art, replete with detailed and realistic character portraits, to the new design, alleging that it does not capture the essence of the older Monkey Island titles and even going so far as to call it a betrayal of the older games.

Many fans are pleased about Monkey Island’s comeback and have trust in its ability to transmit a solid tale based on the franchise’s setting, despite the new graphic style.

Return to Monkey Island Set After Monkey Island 2

Let’s get to the good stuff since Return to Monkey Island does some extremely unusual things with its tale. It is the sixth Monkey Island game, but it is set immediately after the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, with the goal of finally fully resolving that cliffhanger and other narrative strands from that game that remain unsolved, and it does not disregard the events of all subsequent games.

Monkey Island 2 ended on a massive cliffhanger. Future games did their best, but we wanted to take on the challenge front on. While Return to Monkey Island begins immediately after Monkey 2, it is not a “sequel,” and it will be a pleasant experience.

Return to Monkey Island Characters

Return to Monkey Island Review: Given its narrative premise, Return to Monkey Island is bound to bring back several of the series’ most popular and iconic characters. Guybrush Threepwood, the series’ protagonist, is back, as is undead nemesis LeChuck. Guybrush will not be alone, and his customary companion Elaine Marley will accompany him once again.

Even the Demonic Talking Skull is making a comeback. Even better, all of these parts will be played again by their original performers. The game features all three of the series’ main characters: the pirate Guybrush Threepwood, his love Elaine Marley, and his archenemy undead pirate LeChuck. Murray the Demonic Talking Skull also makes an appearance.

Return to Monkey Island Location and Hint System

Return to Monkey Island Review: As with previous games in the series, the game takes set on fictitious Caribbean islands during the Golden Age of Piracy. Guybrush is finally on his way to discovering the secret of Monkey Island, and his trip in Return to Monkey Island will take him to a variety of unusual and familiar locales.

In terms of the latter, we shall, of course, return to areas such as Melee Island and Monkey Island itself. As one might imagine, the game will include a number of new islands, two of which have been named Brr Muda and Terror Island.

Return to Monkey Island makes an unusual compromise for modern audiences that its predecessors simply refused to make: it includes a Hint system. Those who have played the original Monkey Island games will be familiar with the sensation of becoming spectacularly stuck on a puzzle and having no idea how to progress.

However, Ron Gilbert claims that with the internet and the availability of manuals and walkthroughs, that impact no longer exists. Return to Monkey Island will provide tips on how to proceed in the game’s environment.

Return to Monkey Island Graphics & Visuals

Return to Monkey Island will be available on the Nintendo Switch and PC, and while recommended system requirements have yet to be revealed, the minimum needs are surprisingly low. To play the game, you’ll need an AMD FX-4300 or an Intel Core i3-3240 processor, as well as a Radeon HD 7750 or a GeForce GT 640, 8 GB of RAM, and 4 GB of storage.

The game keeps the aesthetics of the original two games, with its 2D animation and colorful yet still pirate-y colors, while increasing the quality and resolution to create a stunning blend of current visuals and traditional style.

Return to Monkey Island Release date & Platforms

Return to Monkey Island is the sixth installment in the Monkey Island series, and it will be available on Windows, macOS, and Nintendo Switch on September 19, 2022.
