Proteus

When Proteus was published, games with wide expanses felt the urge to fill every minute with distractions, with things to do – yet Proteus was perfectly fine with just that: space. Proteus was a peaceful game in a medium crammed with loud firefights, a game that reveled in aimless exploration and deep meditation, devoid of action but rich with beauty.

Although The Cloud Catcher Chronicles and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have lately popularized the concept of games depicting soothing, contemplative environments, Proteus was the first to do it in 2013.

Oikospiel

Oikospiel is a satirical satire of the gaming industry’s labor conditions involving a gang of dogs creating a video game dog opera.

It’s exactly as bizarre as it sounds. Explore the enchanting climates of planet Earth and the asteroid 433 Eros as Pluto, a German Shepherd.

Visit an Arctic Ocean wind farm, Kochiri Forest, a computer OS, a messy workstation, a Kansas union-busting prairie, a luxury airplane, a flooded city in the North Pole, and many other feverish environments.

You almost certainly won’t “get” Devil Daggers after the first five minutes. On closer examination, this is why it’s so engrossing and performs the fundamentals so well that it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t typically progress.

The idea is straightforward: you play as a lo-fi figure who can fire daggers from his hands against demons. It’s an unending barrage of screen-filling horrors that you’d be lucky to survive for more than a handful of minutes.

Devil Daggers continually challenges you to improve yourself, instilling a sense of success that DICE could only wish for. This gem even has an easter egg in DOOM Eternal, so any FPS good enough for id should be good enough for you.
